STEP Exam Preparation

    What is STEP?

The Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP) is one of the most challenging mathematics entrance exams used by top UK universities — most notably the University of Cambridge and, in some cases, the University of Warwick.

Taken at the end of Year 13, STEP is designed to test mathematical depth, creativity, and problem-solving ability far beyond standard A-Level topics.

STEP assesses advanced concepts from A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and requires students to demonstrate their reasoning through structured written answers rather than multiple-choice responses.

    Why is STEP Important?

For students applying to Mathematics, Computer Science, or related programs at leading UK universities, a strong STEP score is often a key factor in securing an offer.

Universities use it to differentiate between exceptional applicants who already hold top A-Level predictions.

In short — STEP is not just about what you know, but how creatively and rigorously you can think under pressure.

    MAT (Mathematics Admissions Test)

For: Mathematics, Computer Science, and joint degrees (Oxford, Imperial College, and others)

The MAT is a 2-hour paper designed to test mathematical reasoning and the ability to apply knowledge creatively.

It is used by universities like Oxford, Imperial College London, and Warwick to select top mathematical minds.

    Preparation with Azeristudent includes:

    • Step-by-step walkthroughs of past papers
    • Strengthening algebra, calculus, and logic skills
    • Timed simulations for real-exam performance

TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission)

For: Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science (Durham, LSE, Lancaster, and others)

The TMUA measures a student’s ability to think mathematically and handle abstract reasoning.

It’s a valuable test for applicants to several top UK universities beyond Oxbridge.

    Our approach:

    • Diagnostic assessment to identify weak areas
    • Targeted lessons to improve mathematical fluency
    • Full mock exams with tutor feedback

    LNAT (Law National Aptitude Test)

For: Law applicants (Oxford, LSE, KCL, Durham, Bristol, and others)

The LNAT assesses logical reasoning, comprehension, and analytical writing — not legal knowledge.

It’s essential for students applying to competitive Law programs in the UK.

    With Azeristudent, you’ll learn to:

    • Analyse complex arguments quickly
    • Develop strong essay writing skills
    • Master critical reading under time pressure

    UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test)

For: Medicine and Dentistry applicants (UK universities)

The UCAT measures mental agility, logical thinking, and decision-making under pressure.

It is used by leading medical schools in the UK and abroad.

    We prepare students through:

    • Realistic UCAT question banks
    • Practice in verbal, quantitative, abstract, and situational judgement sections
    • Strategies for pacing and decision-making accuracy

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

For: All international students (Undergraduate, Master’s, and beyond)

The IELTS exam is essential for university admission and visa purposes.

It evaluates English proficiency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

    Azeristudent’s IELTS Preparation includes:

    • Academic-focused strategies
    • Real test simulations and progress tracking
    • Vocabulary and grammar development for high band scores (7.0+)

    TARa (Thinking and Reasoning Assessment)

For: Oxford applicants (PPE, Economics & Management, Experimental Psychology, etc.)

The TARa is one of Oxford’s most intellectually demanding admissions tests.

It measures critical thinking, data analysis, and problem-solving ability — skills essential for reasoning-based degrees.

    Our TARa preparation covers:

    • Practice with real past questions
    • Logical and analytical reasoning enhancement
    • Intensive essay-writing and data interpretation workshops

    • Targeted Practice: Covering the hardest A-Level and Further Maths topics.
    • Problem-Solving Skills: Building logical reasoning and structured mathematical writing.
    • Mock Exams & Feedback: Regular practice under exam conditions with detailed performance analysis.
    • Confidence Building: Helping students manage time, stress, and complex questions effectively.

    Who Should Take STEP?

    Students applying for:

    • Mathematics at the University of Cambridge
    • Mathematics or related subjects at the University of Warwick
    • Other universities that occasionally accept STEP results

    Exam Format

    • Papers: STEP 2 and STEP 3
    • Duration: 3 hours per paper
    • Question Type: Long-form written answers (no calculator)
    • Content: Based on A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics syllabi
    • Dates: Usually in June, after A-Level exams

    When to Start Preparing

We recommend starting at least 9–12 months before the test date.

This allows time to master the content, develop advanced problem-solving strategies, and gain familiarity with past paper styles.
